Utah: Myth of “Polite”

I keep hearing from people that “Utahns are so nice.”  That “The people here are so kind.”  These individuals are, of course, just passing through.  Meanwhile, objective outside observers recognize that Utahns are the rudest people in the U.S. and the worst drivers.  As someone having lived here for seventeen years now, I can assure you, these descriptions are in fact true.

As a child visiting family in Utah I vividly recall being disgusted by the locals refusing to stop and pull over for emergency vehicles on response and parking on the wrong side of the street.  At eight years old I knew that these people were driving on the wrong side of the street so they could park on the wrong side of the street.  Perpetuating the mind set of “Of course I had to do this wrong thing because I was already doing this other wrong thing.”  I will never understand how possessing a “church based morality” allows these ‘people’ to spit in the face of the law and basic decency.

The problem here is a low standard of ‘polite’.  Polite is not simply not saying mean things.  More than that the bigger problem is the grave disregard for the safety of people around them.  How is it polite for these people to park next to fire hydrants and in fire lanes, thus inhibiting response by professionals in times of emergency?  How is it polite to drive the wrong way in one way lanes of traffic?  How is it polite to sit at green lights with dozens of other cars all around you?  I know I’ve spent a lot of time on the podcast talking about Utah drivers but that’s only because of how serious this problem is.  This people shows such complete and utter disrespect for the responsibility of owning 7,000 pound weapon of mass destruction.  It’s no surprise that they have so little respect for the laws they rely upon for their own safety.  Refusing to acknowledge that those same laws protect the communities that they expend so much energy attacking.  Claiming the perceived attacks on their “religious freedom” as sufficient cause for denying civil liberties to citizens that they call ‘icky’.

It is well past time that these ‘people’ start investing in their children’s schools instead of their grandparents’ churches.  The purpose of schools is to educate but when “adults” in this state can’t manage to act appropriately when a light changes speaks directly to the inefficacy of “teaching to the test” which is at best, the only thing that Utah “parents” are demanding their schools teach their children.  And that would be almost understandable if these decisions were not based upon the projected interpretation of their church’s gospel.  Education in this state seems to be held to the same low standard as their politeness which is touted as being ‘ok’ enough as opposed to the allegedly higher standard of living Christian churches claim to garner under their steeples.

Many will think I’m projecting my own prejudices by writing this.  Maybe I am.  I learned at a young age that opinions are frivilous, fluid, and arbitrary.  When I say something, anything, it is based upon empirical data, objective observation, and personal experience.  I have written these things because I have witnessed these things.  Utahns are not polite by any measure of polite.  They are indeed dangerous and have no reason to be let loose in public.

Holiday Weekend, I Guess

So, I’ve got a three day weekend starting today at 4:30 MDT.  I don’t know what all I’m going to do with that time.  Sure I have about thirteen hours of video and audio to edit but you guys know how well I stay on task.  I have a handful of movies I haven’t watched and should have by now, including Saving Private Ryan I just remembered.  Should I periscope while watching one of these movies this weekend?  Use Twitter or e-mail and send suggestions.  Use #ComedyShedRadio and #WhatDoIDid and we’ll see what I decide to do.  Some options are Cool Hand Luke, Deliverance, and any suggestions you guys may have.

I may put up the Patreon content we’ve recorded.  I don’t know yet.  I will get it up in June regardless.  Anyway, have a good holiday or whatever.  See you guys later.

Turns Out I Suck

I had some trouble with the equipment and it took all day to figure it out.  I have a lot of editing to do so, today’s episode will come out tomorrow.

There are some good news tidbits I'll share then but I'll tell you now the mixed news announcement I've got for.  Loren’s work situation changed back so he's not able to play for the foreseeable future.  Joining the show in a more consistent capacity is Ben and Kaleb’s wife, Jess.  I'll talk about this and more when I record the intro and cut the new episode.

Tell your friends, things are getting competent at comedyshedradio.com.

Somewhat Tardy

But we’ll say it’s for a reason.  I noticed some interesting ‘headlines’ earlier that I want to check into before I record the intro this week.  I’ll look into these things and see what’s what.

Season 4 of Lucifer released on Netflix yesterday.  This season being produced by Netflix is ten episodes instead the network standard run of 22 episodes.  I liked it a lot.  To describe it sans spoilers, it’s worth the time if you’re at all interested in the show.  The ten episode run serves it well.  Compressing the storytelling is not the best way to put it but the quality of the storytelling is not diminished.  Once again suggesting new and interesting perspectives to the traditional catholic mythology.  And of course the wit and pith has carried forward.  I recommend you watch it.  Do with that as you will.

I also finally started The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.  I’m enjoying that too.  Don’t forget that the end of this month on Prime Video that Good Omens will finally be available.  I can’t wait to figure out how I’m going to watch it.

Here We Go Again

Well, I missed last week.  I'm working on editing about five hours of content just from our game.  My work schedule is back to normal so I'll start getting things done this week.

This week’s episode is going to be a review of War of the Spark.  The upcoming set for Magic the Gathering from Wizards of the Coast, this Friday, May 3rd.  I'm very much excited to play this set.  It's looking like this set has a stronger than usual emphasis on planeswalkers.  I imagine that shit is gonna get weird in this one.

I’m in trouble.  It’s difficult for me to motivate and get anything done, especially on time.  I often mention how I don’t start on things until my weekend is over and I’m up against deadline.  I haven’t depressive lately but my apartment looks like shit and I don’t do the things I want to do, like this.  I could use some help.  If you guys have any tips or advice that isn’t “Just cheer up.” or “Just think happy thoughts.” I want to hear what you got.  Or just start bombarding me with tweets or whatever on Tuesday mornings so my lazy ass will get out of bed and do something.

You have the contact info, let’s figure this out together...or just take a nap instead.  Meh, whatever.
